4th Grade Spanish Class - Día de Muertos

Our fourth grade is participating in Spanish classes through the instruction of a parent volunteer, Mrs. Martinez. The students have been working on greetings and vowel pronunciations, as well as reciting the Hail Mary and the Sign of the Cross. Recently, students completed a project after learning about the cultural celebration, Day of the Dead, which remembers those who have passed away.

Naper Settlement Field Trip

This fall, our fourth grade class visited the Naper Settlement in Naperville, IL. Students traveled back in time as they experienced late 19th and early 20th century life through historic homes, businesses and exhibits. Upon arrival, one of our first stops was the one room schoolhouse where the children responded to their teacher with “yes ma’am” and used slate boards to practice printing their names. The Blacksmith and Print Shops afforded us the opportunity to experience the tools and skills that were involved in these trades. As I pulled out my I-Phone to capture this moment, the students commented as to just how far we have come a century or so later.

Reading Together!

Seventh graders come and read to the kindergarteners throughout the year as part of their service and mentorship for the younger grades. During the month of October, the seventh graders brought their favorite Halloween books to share with their kindergarten partners.

Flashlight Friday

During October, the seventh graders also wrote Halloween stories for the children in Kindergarten and 1st grade. The seventh graders brought their stories to the classes and shared them with these students during Flashlight Friday. During Flashlight Friday, students would bring in flashlights; this allowed students to set an atmosphere of spookiness to read their stories, keeping with the holiday theme.
