Sacraments - First Reconciliation and First Communion

Most of our students receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Communion for the first time in the second grade. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, children need to complete a minimum of two years of RE (Religious Education) and a few other requirements to receive the Sacraments for the first time. It is important to remember that it is never too late to complete the Sacraments of the Church (we work with people of all ages to prepare for the Sacraments). Please contact the RE office if you know anyone beyond the second grade who would like to receive First Communion.

Preparing for Jesus Day - First Communion Retreat (First Communion Students and Parents)
on 03/12/2017 at 10 am

Students preparing for First Communion have a retreat on Sunday, March 12, 2017. We will join the First Communion Class of St. Cornelius Church for the retreat. The retreat will be held at St. Cornelius. We ask that each child be accompanied by at least one parent; both are welcome Every student needs at least one adult to attend this retreat. More details coming soon. We ask that only First Communion children and their adults attend.

First Communion Practice on Saturday 04/29/2017 from 11 am to 12:30 pm

There will be a practice for the First Communion Students on Saturday, April 29, 2017. The students are asked to meet in the School Auditorium. Final details will go home with your student at the practice, including photo order information. Please make sure you get the final information after the practice.

First Communion on Saturday 05/06/2017 at 11 am Mass

It is recommended that parents keep this entire day open until the early afternoon, as it is not possible to give an exact time to the end of Mass.

Parents will be able to purchase First Communion Portraits (Photos) of their child and/or a group photo from Van Gogh School Photography. Students will have picture times available to them prior to Mass starting at 8:30 am (if you choose to have photos for this occasion). All students need to be in the School Auditorium by 10 am for a group photo. Photo order forms (and information) will go home with your student the day of the communion practice. Please be on time for the group photo.

There will be reserved seats for the students. There will also be reserved seats for families behind the students. All other family members and guests are welcome to sit in any unreserved pews in the church.

We ask that students come dressed for First Communion. It is traditional that girls wear a white dress, and boys wear a shirt and tie (NO JEANS). Dress your “Sunday Best” for this special day.

First Communion Mass is a parish event. We ask that everyone present participate in the Mass. One way to help our First Communicants prayer experience is to lend your voice during responses and singing.

We ask that everyone be on their best “Church” behavior and be quiet in the church (no loud talking). No picture taking is allowed during the Mass (except from the choir loft). Video cameras and photography equipment are allowed in the choir loft. Please turn cell phones or pagers to silent mode (or off) in church.

May Crowning on Sunday 05/07/2017 at the 9:30 am Mass

The First Communicants are requested to return to Church the next day for the 9:30 am Mass. The First Communicants will be part of our traditional May Crowning during the 9:30 am Mass. We ask that they wear their First Communion outfits back to Mass this day.
